Bald einheitlicher Linux-Standard für Handys?

Linux für das Handy: Diese Idee ist zwar nicht neu, hat sich aber bislang noch nicht durchgesetzt. Der Grund liegt im fehlenden einheitlichen Standard, der durch Systeme wie Symbian oder auch Windows Mobile gegeben ist.


Doch wie Inside-Handy berichtet, planen Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung und Vodafone eine Stiftung zu gründen,


deren Aufgabe es ist, das erste globale, offene, linuxbasierte betriebssystem für mobile Endgeräte zu etablieren


Die Idee ist großartig. Denn so können die Entwicklungskosten gesenkt und eine größere Flexibilität erreicht werden. Open Source machts möglich. So nimmt es nicht wunder, dass TheWirelesswire enthusiastisch schreibt:


"A world-class Linux-based platform aims to provide key benefits for the mobile industry including lower development costs, increased flexibility, and a richer mobile ecosystem - all of which contribute to the group's ultimate objective of creating compelling, differentiated and enhanced consumer experiences."


Man darf gespannt sein, ob sich diese Plattform auch in der Praxis bewährt und Linux tatsächlich zum erhofften neuen Standard wird. Denn sicherlich ist es, wie auch Look C Find.com schreibt,


not clear if a significant body of handset makers and operators will ever consolidate around a single mobile Linux platform. It's possible that individual mobile operators will develop their own Linux-based platforms that don't interoperate with others
